first_imgArgos Win Exciting 5-4 Match over #11 Cameron University March 18, 2008 PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida Men’s tennis team earned a hard fought thrilling victory over Cameron University, Tuesday afternoon on the UWF campus. The Fourth ranked Argos pulled out a 5-4 win over the 11th ranked Aggies from Lawton, Oklahoma, on the strength of winning two of the three doubles matches, while the teams split the six singles matches. Luiz Bernardi topped Nicholas Mascheroni in a three set match by a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 score to help clinch the UWF win. The Argos are now 14-2 on the season, and have won 14 of the last 15 matches with the only loss to Division I powerhouse Mississippi. The match began with the Argos winning at the number one and two doubles spots, both by 8-5 scores. UWF’s top doubles tandem of Eduardo Cavasotti and Luis Arboleda improved to 5-3 overall in number one doubles matches this year, while Nicolas Barrientos and Patrick Bateman are now an impressive 12-2 in number two doubles matches. Luiz Bernardi and Jose Ycaza dropped their number three doubles match by an 8-2 score; however, both players would make up for it with strong singles performances. In singles, the 23rd ranked Eduardo Cavasotti dropped a 7-5, 6-2 match to 50th ranked Jordi Mullor, at the number one singles position. Cameron also won at the number two singles, as 46th ranked Daniel Pazos defeated the Argos Nicolas Barreintos by a 7-5, 6-0 score. The 17th ranked Barrrientos dropped only his second dual match this season, and is now 10-2 on the season. Bernardi won the number three singles match to improve to 7-2 this season in singles play. Jose Ycaza followed his doubles partner, Bernardi, in capturing a key singles win to help the Argos pull out the exciting victory. Ycaza toppled Ignacio Murgier by a 6-4, 6-4 score. At the number four singles, the Argos’ Diego Zorzi topped Saman Samii by a 6-4, 6-2 score. Carlos Zamora dropped a tough three set match at the number six position, by a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 score to Agustin Criado. The Argonauts will next participate in the Blue-Gray Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama on March 27-29. The Argos will return home in April, with five home matches in the first eight days of the month. BYU-Hawaii is the first opponent on April 1st, and two Gulf South Conference opponents, Ouachita Baptist and Delta State will be in town in early April as well. Singles#1 Jordi Mullor (CU) def.
