Wenger: Southampton could have won the Premier League

first_img1 Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claims Southampton could have won the Premier League title by now had they not sold most of the their top stars.Wenger benefited from Southampton’s previously unstable financial situation when he signed Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from the South Coast side, while Gareth Bale left St Mary’s left for Tottenham as a prospect and later joined Real Madrid as an £80m mega star.During the summer, Luke Shaw moved to Manchester United, Dejan Lovren forced through a move to Liverpool and Arsenal swooped again for Calum Chambers. The club has managed to hold to talents like Morgan Schneiderlin and James Ward-Prowse and the Arsenal boss believes if the Saints stars past and present had stayed together they could have broken in to the top four and possibly tasted title glory.“I think if you look at the talents they have sold over the years, they could have been contenders for the Premier League title because they lost Chamberlain, Walcott, Gareth Bale, plus all the players they lost last season, plus all the players they still have,” said Wenger, whose side face the Saints in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night.“They have done a fantastic job at Southampton and they deserve a lot of credit.” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger last_img
